The Favourite
by Christine Riney

Yorgos Lanthimos, Ireland | UK | USA

A period drama set in the kingdom of Queen Anne during the turn of the 18th Century, England. Full of court politics, manipulation, and cruelty with a 'love' triangle thrown in the mix. What this isn't is a historically accurate tale.

The trio in the triangle who delight us with their performances are Olivia Colman (Queen Anne), Rachel Weisz (Lady Sarah) and Emma Stone (Abigail). Their collective wit and wickedness keep you engaged to the end.

The setting used for Queen Anne's palace is Hatfield House, a luxurious country estate one can visit in Hertfordshire, England. The costumes are created by three-time Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell (The Young Victoria, The Aviator, and Shakespeare in Love). The whole production is rather sumptuous and debauched.

A true Mad Hatter's event, hardly surprising when you know that this is Yorgos Lanthimos' latest film. He also brought us The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer.
