Film Review: DIXIELAND
by Karen Pecota

William Hellmuth, USA 2023

In this period piece, the audience is transported into the Civil War era in DIXIELAND. A regiment of Union Black soldiers is ambushed and only one man escapes with his life. Traveling through the night for his safety, the lone Union soldier comes upon a campfire tended by an injured white Confederate soldier. This man is not only injured with a bad belly wound but holds a rifle and a banjo not his own.

The two exchange pleasantries and continue their introductions with hesitation. Talking through the night by campfire they try desperately to ignore their immediate needs: one needing a gun, socks and boots; the other needing physical healing. Both are in need of food and sleep! The line between good and evil runs right through every human heart. The two soldiers lost in war territory, but by sunrise only the good prevails and each man's dignity is preserved.
