Film Review: EVERY DAY AFTER
by Karen Pecota

Elisa Gambino, Philippines 2023

Documentary filmmaker, Elisa Gambino, and award-winning cinematographer, Neal Broffman collaborate in EVERY DAY AFTER to tell an incredible story of a sister's compassion and love of her young sibling who has been neglected by their parents because of his appearance.

Gambino and Broffman could take their viewers down a path of sorrow, but share, "We highlight the power of sibling love to face challenges of healthcare access, poverty, and stigma, and showcase the resilience, struggles and triumphs of both brother Jary, and sister, Jessa."

Placing a high value on appearances can be demoralizing for children who are born with physical differences. Gambino and Broffman follow a human–interest story from the Masbate Province in the Philippines.

Jary was born with a cleft palate, and, because of his facial disfigurement, he was shunned and neglected since birth by his mother and father.

Jary's older sister, Jessa cared for him when he was young. Eventually, Jessa and her husband bring Jary into their own family to raise alongside their two children. Knowing the impact that medical attention can have on Jary's survival and a successful future, Jessa seeks for the attention her brother needs. Jessa’s perseverance is a necessary part of his survival. Jary's physical and emotional recovery is vital for his destiny, not to mention his self-confidence and identity.

EVERY DAY AFTER follows a complicated journey the two siblings take together in the hope that Jary gets a new lease on life because Jessa strongly believes that his life matters.
