Film Review: PIVOT
by Karen Pecota

Ana Gusson, Canada 2021

Based on a true story, award-winning director and accomplished 2D Animator, Ana Gusson collaborates with screenwriter Robyn Campbell to share the story of 12-year-old Ashley in a quandary of how she wants to present herself in PIVOT.

Ashley's mother purchased clothing that seems too frilly for Ashley's taste. The back and forth banter ends when Ashley finally re-designs the attire to suit her liking much to the disappointment of her mother.

Gusson's style of animation is the perfect art design platform to share not only the real situation but also the sincere feelings and attitudes that surface when adolescents and parents do not agree about life choices. Gusson's short film has food for thought on culturally sensitive issues on parenting and adolescents trying to find their identity in a complex world.
