Film Review: The Professional Parent
by Karen Pecota

Erik Jasaň, Slovakia, Romania, 2024

Ingrid (Ela Lehotská) is a single parent who lives in a small village in eastern Slovakia. To make ends meet she does whatever is necessary to put food on the table for her daughter and herself, including prostitution as a last resort.

Ingrid applies to become a “professional parent” appointed by the state. This type of person is the legal representative or guardian, for abandoned gypsy children known in this part of the country as Romas. These orphans are stigmatized in Slovakia and are generally treated worse than second-class citizens.

Ingrid would receive a nice salary if chosen, and as a caregiver for a young Roma girl; however, it could potentially cause problems within her immediate family dynamics. Ingrid is hopeful this will not happen, but unfortunately, Ingrid’s prejudices get the best of her where she herself becomes violent with the young Roma child.

Filmmaker Erik Jasaň says, “My film offers a raw and unflinching look at the struggles faced by Ingrid. Battling financial hardships and societal biases that lead to a tumultuous journey fraught with personal demons and moral dilemmas.” Adding, “We were compelled to bring to the audience THE PROFESSIONAL PARENT because of its bold exploration of difficult themes, including the harsh realities of poverty and the complexities of parenthood.” Continuing, “Audiences should see a fearless portrayal of the human condition and its unwavering commitment to truth.”

One must be advised that the abuse displayed toward a child in THE PROFESSIONAL PARENT is disturbing and difficult to observe.
