Film Review: Gondola
by Shelly Schoeneshoefer

Veit Helmer Germany, Georgia 2023

This film truly fit the bill for me since it was a silent film. I didn’t need a language to understand the film and it was done in a completely visual format of a universal language called love. The storyline was simple. Receiving notice of the passing of her father, Iva (Mathilde Irrmann) returns to a small village located in a valley in the Georgian mountains. Director Veit Helmer found this very special location due to a lovely old-fashioned gondola which is still working and was about to be dismantled. This backdrop was the perfect setting for Helmer’s main character who has the opportunity to take on a job as a gondola operator. There she sees in passing, her colleague Nino (Nino Soselia) and with every half hour of the gondolas crossing each other, their love grows into a playful romance and a possible future. Who knows? This truly is a lovely film that catches your heart as you walk out the doors of the cinema with a smile on your face.
