A science fiction thriller based on the first of a trilogy by Rick Yancey. Like The Hunger Games, it begins with a heroine and in this case it is Cassie (Chlöe Grace Moretz), who narrates us through an invasion of the planet. In contrast to Katniss Everdeen, Cassie passively watches her family and friends being killed off one by one when they are systematically attacked due to aggressive offensive plans. The first is an electrical wave which causes great international problems since all cell phones, banking, cars and anything else related to electricity, comes to a full stop. The next wave is surf’s up with tidal waves and flooding wherever water exists. Then comes a virus, and after that are the sleepers who were aliens who lived on the Earth for some time and now have to kill off the remaining humans. The fifth wave is the final plan where the aliens decided to train children to kill off the rest of the population. But Cassie is determined to save her little brother and has made friends who will help her in her quest.

This is clearly part one of a series, and the ending doesn’t feel like it is the end of the movie, so the show must go on. The film is a science fiction for young adults. The plot is not so complicated and the actors and actresses are cute high school kids! I would say save your money and watch this one at home on the TV. (Shelly Schoeneshoefer)
