Snatched is a fun, light-hearted comedy, depicting a mother and daughter on a vacation gone seriously wrong. Emily’s (Amy Schummer) boyfriend has just broken up with her, as they were preparing to embark on a romantic non-refundable getaway to Ecuador. After all her friends refuse to go with her, she decides to invite her overprotective anxious mother (Goldie Hawn) to come along on the trip and, after some trepidation, convinces her to go. At first, despite the tension in their relationship, they seem to be having a good time, until they are abducted by local militants for ransom and held as prisoners. The story that unfolds is at times ridiculous, at times hysterically funny, but, besides being a comedy, also takes the two women on a more serious search of themselves, reflecting on their respective issues and the ways in which they want to change. Amy Schummer, who has been known through her comedy to challenge conventions of female body image and behaviour, continues to do so in her blunt and sometimes crass manner. Her self-deprecating humor can be somewhat juvenile, but bottom line: this is a great movie for kicking back and just enjoying a silly laugh. (Nava Berg)
