Karl Schmidt (Hübner) suffered a psychological collapse after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Now, five years later, he is still undergoing treatment and working odd jobs in Hamburg-Altona, when he meets his old friends Ferdi (Buck) and Raimund (Hosemann). They have formed a band which is so successful that they are not only stars in the German techno music scene, but also rich. Their new recording “Magical Mystery” promises to be another hit and they plan to take it on the road to perform under the auspices of their studio Bumm Bumm Records. All they need is a driver for the tour. Karl takes on this responsibility and now we have a road trip through Germany in the 1990s. Besides Ferdi and Raimund there are Anja, Dubi, Holger, Basti, Sigi, Schöpfi, and Rosa, as well as two hamsters Lolek and Bolek. We follow their craziness from Berlin to Bremen, Cologne, Munich, Hamburg, Dortmund and then back to Berlin. There are mix-ups, misunderstandings, good and bad performances, eating with chop sticks, barfing, problems with hotels, a harbor tour, a hamster tragedy, you name it – all problems which try to be amusing or startling or both.
This is based on the book of the same name by Sven Regener, who is also responsible for the movie script. Regener became very successful with his book Herr Lehmann, which was also filmed as a trilogy. Here you can see several German cities, as well as listen to more than 25 songs and become acquainted with a group of upcoming German actors, not to mention the established actor Detlef Buck.
