In this psychological thriller, Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie) is a young fashion design student starting her studies in London. The first days prove to be challenging as she adjusts to big city student life, which is a shock for a sensitive girl from Cornwall. In her quest to find a home Eloise stumbles across an ad for a bedsit in Soho. Her new landlady, world-weary Ms. Collins (Diana Rigg) has lived at Goodge Place since the 1960s, and Eloise soon finds that her room is a time portal to that glamorous yet seedy time in Soho. The supernatural abilities that Eloise possesses link her back in time to Sandie (Anya Taylor-Joy), an aspiring singer and dancer from the mid-’60s who once occupied her room at the bedsit. As Eloise excitedly explores life with Sandie, they soon meet Jack (Matt Smith) and life takes a sinister turn. Time travel may be intoxicating but reality and the present soon become a fight for survival.
There are many well-known British actors who appear in this film including Matt Smith of Dr. Who and The Crown fame and sadly two stars who appear for the last time, Diana Rigg and Margaret Nolan. Diana Rigg will be known by most international audiences for her role in Game of Thrones. Margaret Nolan is the famous bikini-clad woman painted gold in the James Bond film Goldfinger. Both will be missed from the stage and screen.
The song "Last Night in Soho" was released in 1968 by English band Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich and is described in Colin Larkin's Encyclopedia of Popular Music as "a leather-boy motorbike saga portraying lost innocence in London's most notorious square mile". If this film is anything to go by, London’s Soho was and still is notorious. If you are a fan of London, the 60’s style, and its music this will more than satisfy your senses. You will hardly notice when a thriller turns to horror. (Christine Riney)
