Die Päpstin is based on the novel Pope Joan by the American writer Donna Woolfolk Cross. Its world premier was October 19, 2009, in Berlin. As the original Joan was born in Ingelheim near Frankfurt, it was appropriate that the main actress, Johanna Wokalek, should also be German. This sweeping historical drama is set against the turbulent events of the ninth century, the so-called Dark Ages. It is a story of an extraordinary woman who, disguised as a man, rose to sit on the throne of St. Peter to rule Christianity. (Elaine Schönfelder)
