Playwright Clare Boothe Luce’s The Women has been revisited for the big screen by director and writer Diane English. English’s screenplay for The Women is similar to the film version by Anita Loos and Jane Murfin in 1939 in that no men were written into the script. The all-star female cast chosen by English is the icing-on-the-cake that makes the trivial narrative worth a two-hour cinema sit.
The wife of a rich and famous executive, Mary Haines (Meg Ryan), is privy to her husband’s attraction to the amazingly sexy perfume sales clerk Crystal Allen (Eva Mendes). Mary is mortified that her sweet and happy marriage is not shared by her beloved and with the help of her wealthy circle of socialite friends; Mary takes a new lease on life for the love of a different affair.
